2004 TeboComputers was established in 2004 after having recognized that the Imizamo Yethu community was skill undersized but primarily, as an after school children programme. I took the initiative of compiling a comprehensive Business Plan explaining my thoughts and vision about TeboComputers establishment and operation. My ideas were inspired by my involvement with children who mostly came from poor, broken family structures and single parenting backgrounds. My obligation was to spend some quality time with them as a father figure and mentor, and by sharing with them about my personal upbringing as a South African and my inspiration to graduate from college. THE URGE TO REACH OUT The purpose behind that was to motivate them to continue with their education and to love and respect their parents. While at college, I assisted students on their day to day computer problems including faculty members. What motivated me in taking such an initiative is the continuity urge of reaching out to others by sharing my computer expertise and discloses technology as the prospect drift. My central focus is destitute yet innocent children who were not exposed to technology at home and at school. I am providing a platform whereby they could transcend from, on their transition to a brighter future. Our curriculum was tabled in such a way that it suits their secondary and tertiary education level prospects. Our subjects comprises of the following: First Year Touch Typing Modules * Computer Preamble * Computer Components Identification and Utilization * Typing Pal Software Introduction * Typing Lessons and Advancement * Typing Speed and Efficiency Competitions Second Year Computer Literacy Lessons (Typing Skill Pre-requisite) * Operating Systems Introduction * MS Word * MS PowerPoint * MS Excel * MS Outlook * Internet Research and E-Mailing OUR FACILITIES Our computer lab consist of 12 refurbished computers which were donated by Sanlam Life Insurance Ltd. We also have a brand new Mercer Server, HP Office Jet Pro L7856 All-In-One printer, Internet Connection running on ADSL Modem Router (by ITMAS). All the components are networked on Mercer 24 Ethernet 1000/100/10Mbit/s Ports. Christopher Roomes from Microbiotics kindly installed our network, free of charge and provided enormous help during the setting up stage of the lab. We are also privileged to have a Samsung Air Conditioner, Water Fountain and telephone line. All of which were provided and still are maintained by our main sponsor, IT Management Advisory Services (Pty) Ltd trading as Gartner Africa. This program is 90% sustained by Gartner in terms of day to day operational requirements and expenses, assisted by Mr. Hennie Jacobs who coordinates the natty gritty implementation of the program and Tebogo Backward who is the originator and facilitator of the program. OUR STUDENTS Every year I recruit 36 students from Orange Kloof Primary School who reside in Imizamo Yethu and Hangberg communities. My selection comprises of both genders whose ages are between 12 and 16 years old. I normally prefer teaching grades 7 and 8 pupils as I consider the significance of preparing them for Junior Education Level. Our learning schedule commences at 15h00 to 18h00, Monday through Thursday. Our students are divided into three groups of twelve. The learning duration is one hour. The first group commences at 15h00 – 15h55, the second one at 16h00 – 16h55 and the third from 17h00 – 18h00. MY VISION My vision and aspiration is to acquire the 4th Generation software and equipment so that pupils could be abreast if not advanced with the contemporary technology trends. We cannot be more competitive and efficient without software and hardware upgrading. Opportunities also exist for advanced computer training to students at external learning centres.
